How Many mm is Best between Rotary Blades and Fixed Blades of Plastic Crusher?
Nov,01,2026

The best clearance between the rotary blades and fixed blades of a plastic crusher is generally the smallest safe, uniform clearance the machine can run without blade contact. In most plastic crushers/granulators, that practical range is 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm. “Smallest is best” is a good guiding principle—but not zero—because the blades must cut with a scissor action without rubbing, chipping, or overheating.

Practical blade-clearance guide

Material / application

Typical rotary-to-fixed blade clearance

Notes

Rigid/brittle plastics: ABS, PS, PC, PA, rigid PVC

0.10–0.20 mm

Smallest safe clearance gives cleaner cutting and fewer fines

General PP/PE and mixed rigid plastics

0.15–0.30 mm

Around 0.15–0.20 mm is a common starting point

Tough/soft plastics, film, fiber, thin-walled products

0.20–0.50 mm

Use only within the crusher manufacturer’s specification

Precision/special granulators

Sometimes 0.08–0.15 mm

Follow factory specification exactly; do not guess

Short answer: Usually 0.1–0.5 mm; commonly 0.1–0.2 mm for rigid plastics and 0.2–0.3 mm for general/tougher plastics. Do not go below 0.1 mm unless the manufacturer approves it for that model.

Why smallest safe clearance is best

· Cleaner scissor cutting — less tearing, fewer strings and uncut loops.

· More uniform regrind/flakes — better for downstream pelletizing or molding.

· Lower power consumption — less friction and repeated cutting.

· Less screen blockage — fewer oversized pieces and wraps.

· But too small is harmful — blade contact can cause chipping, rapid wear, heat, noise, bearing load, and rotor damage.

· Too large is also harmful — material is torn rather than cut, producing strings, dust, and oversized flakes.

How to set and check it correctly

1. Follow the XINYI MACHINERY manual for the exact model—manufacturer specification overrides general rules.

2. Use a feeler gauge at the closest point between each rotary blade and the fixed bed blade.

3. Set all blades equally along the full cutting edge.

4. Rotate the rotor by hand and recheck for contact.

5. Tighten blade bolts to the specified torque.

6. Run briefly, stop, and recheck clearance and blade condition.

About XINYI MACHINERY

XINYI MACHINERY is a China-based leading manufacturer of plastic recycling and size-reduction equipment. Its product range includes all kinds of plastic crushers, plastic shredders, plastic crusher blades, plastic mixer machines, blade grinding machines, plastic pelletizing machines, plastic recycling machines, and balers. This broad range allows customers to source crushers, replacement blades, blade grinding/maintenance equipment, mixing, pelletizing, recycling, and baling machinery from one manufacturer. For blade clearance, XINYI MACHINERY’s model-specific specification should always be followed—typically starting around 0.10–0.20 mm for rigid plastics and 0.20–0.30 mm for general/tougher plastics, with up to 0.50 mm only where the design and material require it.

Bottom line: The best gap is the smallest safe and uniform clearance, usually 0.1–0.5 mm; 0.1–0.2 mm is a common target for rigid plastics, and 0.2–0.3 mm for general plastics. Always confirm with XINYI MACHINERY’s model-specific specification before adjustment.
